I was writing and designing this post as Hurricane Irma approaches South Florida. I still need to go buy bottled water, canned food, and flashlights in case the power goes out for a few days. It’s pretty stressful!

I had to board up my windows but I had no idea how to do that. Everyone in my neighborhood has come together to help each other out. Someone found me wood and delivered it to my house. Another neighbor let me use their saw to cut it. Everyone pitched in and helped me nail it up over the windows.

I was worried I was going to have to do it all by myself, but my neighbors stepped up and helped me out. It’s really cool and inspirational to see that kind of teamwork.

Martial arts might seem like it’s all about improving your own skills, but teamwork is a huge part of it as well! Practicing with your classmates is teamwork. You can help your friends improve by working together as a team, showing good judgement, and holding each other accountable. Increasing the morale of one student in the class has a domino effect and creates more positivity for the entire class.

If one of your goals is to compete in tournaments, you’ll quickly see how competition can bring you closer to your teammates. Everyone participates and cheers each other on! Your school is in it together to help everyone rise up and push through. You look out for each other and share the common goal of winning that awesome trophy.

Practicing martial arts with your buddies is teamwork. Helping your community get through a hurricane is also teamwork. Keep working together!
