Okay, I'm just going to say it.
Martial arts school owners are using WAY too much AI in their marketing.
There. I said it.
And I'm not talking about using AI to help you brainstorm something or clean up a sentence. If that's saving you time, great.
I'm talking about what I'm seeing everywhere now.
The crazy AI graphics.
The ridiculously over-the-top wording.
The posts that sound like they were written by the same robot for every martial arts school in the country.
And honestly, I don't get it.
I know these graphics look "cool" to a lot of people. I know the wording sounds flashy and professional.
But I think we're confusing flashy with good marketing.
Does Your Marketing Actually Say Anything?
Look at some of the AI-generated martial arts marketing out there.
You know the kind.
There's a kid doing some completely impossible martial arts move, surrounded by fire, smoke, lightning and about 47 special effects.
And across the top in huge letters:
UNLEASH YOUR CHILD'S POTENTIAL!
IGNITE THEIR INNER WARRIOR!
TRANSFORM THEIR FUTURE!
Okay...
But what does that actually tell me?
Nothing.
And that's my problem with so much of this stuff.
It LOOKS like marketing.
It SOUNDS like marketing.
But when you really look at it, there's not much there.
You don't need a graphic with a kid flying through the air surrounded by flames to convince a parent to try your martial arts school.
You need to give them a reason to care.
That's marketing.
And Now Everyone Sounds the Same
This is the part that really bothers me.
AI has made it incredibly easy to create marketing.
So now everybody is creating it.
And because everyone is using the same tool, everyone is starting to sound the same.
Ask AI to write a post about kids' martial arts and you're probably going to get something about confidence, discipline, respect, leadership and reaching their full potential.
Ask another school owner to do the same thing?
You'll get basically the same post.
Maybe the words are rearranged a little.
Maybe the graphic has a different background.
But it's the same message.
And if your marketing sounds exactly like the school down the street, why would a parent remember you?
That's the whole point of marketing.
You're supposed to stand out.
You Don't Need AI to Make Your Marketing Good
Here's what I wish more school owners would realize:
You already have everything you need.
You have students.
You have instructors.
You have stories.
You have funny things that happen in your school every week.
You have kids who have changed since they started training.
You have parents who are thrilled with the difference they've seen in their children.
You have instructors who have dedicated years of their lives to martial arts.
You have a personality.
That's your marketing.
Tell people about those things.
Tell them about the student who finally broke that board after trying for three months.
Tell them about the shy kid who wouldn't talk to anyone when they started and now runs into class excited to see their friends.
Tell them about the instructor who has been teaching for 25 years.
Tell them why you started your school.
Tell them something funny that happened at your last belt ceremony.
Tell them something that makes someone think, "I want my kid to be part of that."
That's interesting.
That's real.
And nobody else can tell those stories exactly the way you can.
You Don't Have to Sound Like a Motivational Speaker
This is another thing I think AI has made worse.
Everything has to sound SO important.
Every little thing is about "unlocking potential" and "transforming lives" and "becoming the best version of yourself."
Listen, martial arts absolutely can transform someone's life.
But you don't have to say it in every single Facebook post.
Sometimes you can just talk like a normal person.
Sometimes a simple post about something funny that happened in class is going to connect with a parent more than another giant inspirational quote.
And please...
you don't have to use words like "empower," "ignite," "unleash" and "elevate" in every other sentence.
Your school has a personality.
Let people see it.
And Simple Does Not Mean Boring
I think this is another big misconception.
A graphic doesn't have to have 15 things happening on it to be good.
In fact, sometimes the simplest marketing gets the most attention.
One good photo.
One good headline.
One clear idea.
That's it.
You don't need to make your marketing look like a movie poster.
You need someone to see it and immediately understand what you're trying to tell them.
Good marketing doesn't have to scream.
It just has to be good.
I'm Not Saying You Can Never Use AI
If you use AI to help brainstorm something, come up with a few ideas or clean up a sentence, I'm not going to tell you you're doing something wrong.
Use it if it helps you.
But don't let it become your school's voice.
And don't assume that because AI created something in 30 seconds, it must be good.
It isn't.
AI is really good at making things sound polished.
It's really good at making things sound important.
It's really good at giving you a lot of words very quickly.
But sometimes you don't need more words.
You need a better idea.
And you don't need another AI-generated graphic.
You need a graphic that actually communicates something.
So Before You Hit "Generate"...
Think about what you actually want to say.
What would you say if you were talking to this parent face-to-face?
What makes your school different?
What happens in your school that doesn't happen everywhere else?
What would actually make someone care?
Start there.
Don't start with AI.
Start with your school.
Because the best marketing ideas aren't sitting inside a computer somewhere waiting for you to type the perfect prompt.
They're happening in your school every single day.
The student who finally gets that kick right.
The kid who makes their first friend.
The parent who tells you their child is more confident at school.
The instructor who stays late to help a student.
The little moments that make your school what it is.
That's the stuff people want to see.
So yes, use AI if it makes your life easier.
But please don't let a robot turn your amazing, unique martial arts school into another generic martial arts school with a flashy graphic and a bunch of big words.
Your school is better than that.
And your marketing should be, too.
