How to Use EDDM Mailers to Grow Your Martial Arts School

If you run a martial arts school and you have never tried Every Door Direct Mail, you are leaving one of the most effective local marketing tools completely untouched.

EDDM is a United States Postal Service program that lets you send a full-size, full-color mailer to every single home on a mail route you choose • no mailing list required, no addresses needed. You pick the neighborhoods, the post office handles the delivery, and your school lands in the mailbox of every family within a few miles of your location.

For a martial arts school trying to reach local families with kids, that is a powerful thing.

What makes EDDM different from other marketing

Most digital advertising...Facebook ads, Google ads, Instagram posts...reaches people who happen to be scrolling at the right moment. They might see your ad, they might not. And even when they do, they scroll past in two seconds and forget you exist.

A physical mailer is different. It shows up in the home. A parent picks it up, looks at it, and puts it on the counter. Maybe their child sees it. Maybe they talk about it at dinner. It has a physical presence that no digital ad can replicate.

EDDM mailers are also significantly cheaper than you might think. The postage rate for EDDM is lower than standard first-class mail because you are mailing in bulk to a carrier route rather than individual addresses. When you factor in design, printing, and postage, you can typically reach several thousand homes for a few hundred dollars.

How to choose the right routes

This is where most schools make their first mistake. They choose routes based on proximity to their school rather than demographics.

Proximity matters, but what matters more is whether the families on those routes have children in the right age range. Before choosing a route, look at the USPS EDDM mapping tool at eddm.usps.com. It lets you filter routes by household size and average household income. Choose routes with higher average household sizes — those are the families with kids. And choose routes where the income level matches your tuition range.

A good rule of thumb is to target routes within a three to five mile radius of your school, filtered for households with children. Start with two or three routes your first time so you can measure results before scaling up.

When to send

Timing matters more than most schools realize. The best months for EDDM campaigns are January, August, and September.

January works because it is resolution season. Parents are thinking about activities for their kids, new habits, and fresh starts. A mailer landing in January catches them in exactly the right mindset.

August and September work because of the back-to-school momentum. Families are already thinking about structured activities and routines. A martial arts program fits perfectly into that conversation.

Spring: March through May is also a strong window if you are promoting summer programs or trying to lock in enrollments before the school year ends.

Avoid November and December. Families are distracted by holidays and budgets are mentally allocated elsewhere. Your mailer will land in a pile and get recycled.

How many times should you mail

One mailer rarely moves the needle on its own. Marketing research consistently shows that people need to see a message multiple times before they act on it. A family might receive your January mailer and think about it. Then they receive your March mailer and pick up the phone.

If you can commit to mailing the same routes three times over the course of a few months, you will see significantly better results than a single drop. Each mailer can have a fresh design and offer while building recognition over time.

Tracking what works

The simplest way to track EDDM results is to use a specific phone number or landing page URL on the mailer that you do not use anywhere else. When someone calls that number or visits that URL, you know exactly where they came from.

You can set up a free tracking phone number through Google Voice in a few minutes. It forwards to your regular number but lets you see how many calls came from each campaign.

Ask every new inquiry how they heard about you. It takes five seconds and over time gives you a clear picture of which campaigns are working.

The mailer is the start, not the finish

The biggest mistake schools make with EDDM is treating the mailer as the entire campaign. It is not. It is the beginning of a conversation.

When someone calls or walks in because of your mailer, everything that happens next determines whether they enroll. Your phone greeting, your free trial experience, your follow-up...all of it matters. A great mailer that leads to a mediocre experience wastes the campaign.

Make sure your intro offer is compelling, your trial class is your best class, and you follow up with every inquiry within 24 hours. The mailer gets them in the door. Your school keeps them there.
